Hume, DVM, and Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine and Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care joined WestVet in the summer of 2013. Earning the distinction of Diplomate places Dr. Hume in an elite group of board certified veterinary specialists. After completing undergraduate studies and veterinary school, Diplomates complete an additional 3-5 year residency as well as successfully pass rigorous examinations.

He comes to Boise via Philadelphia, Pennslyvania, where for the past 12 years he has worked at the University of Pennsylvania Matthew J. Ryan Veterinary School.

Dr. Dan Hume WestVet Specialist

Dr. Hume completed a Bachelor’s Degree in Animal Science and then was awarded his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 2001, both from Kansas State University. He grew up on a farm and ranch and that meant learning all about animals. “On our farm and ranch in rural southwest Kansas, I grew up surrounded by cattle, horses, dogs and cats,” he said. “I learned aspects of animal husbandry and health care at an early age and this led to my interest in veterinary medicine.”

He says the most rewarding aspect of his job is helping clients and treating their pets to get them back home to their family.

He loves outdoor adventures like hiking, fly fishing, skiing, and snowboarding—a perfect fit for all the Treasure Valley has to offer. Dr. Hume describes his wife Carrie as “his best friend.” She is also a WestVet vet specialist, specializing in oncology. They have three children.
