Andrea Cannon, DVM, Diplomate American College of Veterinary Dermatology (DACVD) treats pets every few weeks at WestVet. This California native owns three busy veterinary practices in the Golden State.

Growing up, she had no plans to pursue veterinary medicine. After graduating from the University of California Santa Barbara in mathematics, she realized that she wanted to work with animals. She promptly enrolled at San Francisco State University to complete the necessary science courses, began working as a veterinary technician, and applied to the UC Davis Veterinary School — where she excelled.

In 1993, she earned her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine then completed an extensive three-year residency in veterinary dermatology at UC Davis.

During this time she earned the distinction of becoming Board Certified by the American College of Veterinary Dermatology (ACVD). Placing her among an elite group of veterinarians with specialized dermatology training. This includes evaluating patients for external parasites, allergies, hormonal skin diseases, and auto-immune diseases. Dr. Andrea Cannon, WestVet Animal Dermatologist
After residency, Dr. Cannon completed a fellowship in human dermatology at the University of Miami. In 1998, she opened her first practice in Modesto, California, followed by additional practices in Roseville/Sacramento and at WestVet.

In 2006, together with her husband Mike, she designed, constructed, and opened Animal Dermatology & Allergy in Rocklin, CA. Dr. Cannon leads Continuing Education lectures to veterinary professionals in both California and Idaho.

She enjoys working with pets—and their humans. “Besides taking care of a pet’s skin and ear problems, I enjoy the relationships I develop with owners,” she said. “The relationships are the most rewarding aspect of the job.”

Dr. Cannon is from a busy, active family that includes her husband and three handsome stepsons. When speaking about a yellow lab they adopted from the Gem state, she said, “Our last dog Sophie was an ’Idaho girl.’ She was the dog of a lifetime. She went snowmobiling, kayaking, ATV riding, hiking, and backpacking—she was always ready for the next adventure.” Which sounds a lot like Dr. Cannon—her adventures include earning a pilot license and being a certified SCUBA diver.
