WHAT IS A SPECIALIST?

Drs Graf and Brourman

A veterinary specialist is anyone who, after completing veterinary school, completes an internship and a residency within a specific area of study. Pursing a career as a specialist requires very vigorous training. Usually, this consists of at least four years of intensive training post-veterinary school. Oftentimes, additional degrees such as a Master's of Science and/or PhD accompany these programs.

Upon completon of an internship and residency, one must complete additional requirements set forth by the particular college of that specialty. This often includes publications in veterinary journals and acceptance by the college of case reports and case logs to insure adequate experience. Once all the credentials have been accepted, the person is considered "board eligible". One must then take and pass all parts of an exam to become a "board certified veterinary specialist". This is a similar training process to that of human medical specialists.
